Red, White, and Beautiful

Posted on

Hey everyone, I wanted to post about my look that I wore for the 4th. I know the holiday is behind us now, but guess what? The 2012 Summer Olympics start in a few weeks on July 27th and this look also works to show your USA pride!

I saw a lot of crazy looks out there for the 4th, but I didn’t want to be hanging out at our friends BBQ with stars, stripes, and flags all over my face. o_0 I wanted to do something subtle, but still celebratory.

Cute and simple, right? Red lipstick, white shimmery shadow, and blue mascara. It’s as easy as that. I also decided to use some peachy blush, and blue eyeliner winged-out. I bought a cheap eyeliner at Walgreens for $0.99 so it was pretty hard to work with and had little color payoff. Boo.

My outfit you ask? I got this flowy red top at Target and these really cute and appropriate shorts at Forever 21.

Product spotlight:

Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer (SPF!)

MAC Eye Shadows in Shroom and Blanc Type

Great Lash mascara in Royal Blue

Smashbox Brow Tech in Brunette

Crappy blue eyeliner in Who Even Cares? x_x

MAC lipstick in Russian Red

MAC lipliner in Brick

Neutrogena Age Shield Face Sunblock SPF 70 (Seemed to work well, my face didn’t get red at all!)

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 70 (Not impressed, still got a little red, but maybe I didn’t spray enough?)

Hey, hi, hello!

Hi everyone!  How are you doing? Are you excited for the holiday tomorrow? I know I am. What makes it even more exciting is John and I are taking off Thursday and Friday and going to Disney World. We reversed the normal week, two days of work and five days of play. Woot! ^_^

I have a lot coming up in the next few months with my site so I wanted to let you all know what will be going on!

  • The site will be getting a makeover soon and have a complete new look. I can’t wait!
  • Photo quality will improve, I promise! John and I are working on a few things that will help with the quality of my photos as well as lighting.
  • Product reviews and giveaways! YAY! Who doesn’t love a giveaway?
  • Step-by-step tutorials on how to create specific looks! If you have a certain look you’d like to see, comment below and holla at me.
  • Video…maybe…no…yes…we’ll see… ;)
  • Facebook page! Please come and like my new Facebook page! It’s under construction, but it will be all fancy and cute before you know it.
  • Speaking of Facebook, are you following me on Twitter? No? Don’t be a big jerk and do it now, no one wants to be a big jerk.

So yeah…!!! Those are some highlights of whats to come!

Speaking of highlights, I got my hair done last weekend. My very talented friend Christine did a subtle ombré on my hair and it looks great!

Ombré on dark hair for summer! Are you lovin’ my painting of my cat?

I hope you all have a fabulous 4th if we don’t talk, and for my international readers, I hope your 4th is sweet as well, even if you don’t have a holiday! :*

Carry-On Cosmetics

Posted on

This past week I was traveling for work for the first time! I am a big over-packer when it comes to trips, but I was determined to only take a carry-on suitcase with me. I had to decide which of my cosmetics were essential to have on the trip to save space. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be!

What I took with me:

All of these items fit into one quart-size ziplock bag, however, I had to put the tinted foundation into another bag, since it was a liquid.

Obviously the items you choose will vary based on your skin type, type of trip, etc., but I thought it would be fun to share.

Here are some general tips that everyone can use when traveling for work:

  • Keep it simple. I chose to bring four eye shadows within the purple color scheme. I had one light color to highlight as well as three shades of purple to play around with. I also made sure the colors were appropriate for work.
  • Stick to the basics. There is a lot we use on a daily basis that is fun to have and use, but not essential. For instance, most days I use a tinted moisturizer, eyeliner, and mascara. You might notice I don’t have any lipstick or gloss, that is because most days I just throw on some tinted lip balm which I keep in my purse.
  • Travel size to the rescue! I brought a lot of my travel size MAC brushes which worked out great and I also happened to have the smaller size tinted moisturizer so I was able to carry it on. Remember, the TSA only allows you to carry-on liquids 3.4 ounces or less, and all your liquids must fit in one quart-sized bag. If your product is over the limit, you can always buy small travel containers to put your product in.

Wedding Bouquet Keepsake

I think it’s common for us former brides to wonder what to do with our bouquets after our big day. I loved my bouquet so much. It was exactly what I asked for, which was for it to mirror the flower arrangement John had sent to our table when he proposed to me.

The flower arrangement John got for me when he proposed! (color is a little off)

My wedding bouquet!

There are some pricey options out there to preserve your bouquet right away in its fresh state, but most of us don’t have $200 to do so. I’ve also seen other cute ideas such as displaying your dried bouquet petals/flowers in a shadow box which displays a photo of your flowers from your wedding day. While I liked this idea, I already have enough things on our walls, so I didn’t want to do this.

A few weeks ago I saw a mason jar at a friend’s house filled with potpourri flowers and tied off with some twine. It was super cute, and a light bulb went off–get a large mason jar to store my dried bouquet!

I took my dried bouquet (note: I hung my bouquet upside down for two weeks after the wedding.) and trimmed the stems down so they would fit inside the jar. I arranged the flowers to my liking and popped the lid back on. I took the ivory ribbon which my bouquet was wrapped in and wrapped it around the top. I secured the ribbon with the same three pins that were used in my bouquet originally! You could also use twine, ribbon, or really anything your heart desires.

On display with one of our engagement photos!

I really loved doing it this way, because I got to use every part of my bouquet, and let’s be serious, who doesn’t love a mason jar? ;)

Did you keep your wedding bouquet? How did you preserve yours? Let me know if you’ll be using this idea and share your photos!

Zooey Deschanel/Retro Inspired Look & Braided Bun

Hi everyone! This weekend I was in Orlando visiting family and got a chance to do this really cute look on my friend Jen. She has brown hair and blue eyes like the oh so adorable  Zooey Deschanel, so we thought it would be fun to do a look based off of her style.

For the most part, Zooey wears a lot of neutrals and browns on her eyes and usually a light peachy pink blush. She’ll sometimes have a pop of color with her lips, but her looks are usually pretty tame and more on the natural side. I love it because it allows her pretty blue eyes to be the focus.

For Jen, we went with that and used light beige and nude colors along with medium browns on her eyes, a pink blush, and a some pink lip gloss.

Product Spotlight:

MAC eye shadow in Rice Paper, Blanc Type, Wedge, Espresso, Soft Brown

MAC Fludline in Blacktrack

MAC Paint Pot in Painterly

MAC Blush in Pink Swoon

Ardell false lashes

MAC Lipglass in Malibu Barbie

Easy Braided Bun:

To create this simple braided bun, gather your hair and secure in a high ponytail on the top of your head. Seperate your hair into either two or three sections depending on how thick your hair is, for Jen we did three braids. Secure your braids with clear elastics. Take one braid at a time and start to wrap around to create a bun. Secure each braid down with bobby pins. Don’t worry if your bun looks a little messy, it’s a casual look! Feel free to add a bow or headband to complete the look. Jen had this adorable green polka dot wrap we used which worked perfectly with the retro look.

I hope you all enjoy this look. I am planning to start doing more step-by-step/how to looks soon! If you have any suggestions let me know.

Feline Frenzy: The Cat Eye

I’ve always loved the winged cat eye look, but recently it seems to have really gotten popular which is awesome. I saw this chart of different style cat eyes on Pinterest and I thought it was pretty cool.

Quick tips for creating the perfect cat-eye:

  • I personally use MAC Blacktrack Fluidline and their #266 thin angled brush. I think it’s super easy to control and create a thin line and build from there.
  • Use small strokes to create your line rather than trying to line the entire length of your eye in one swipe. This will give you more control.
  • A great tip I learned recently was to draw your wing first. By doing this you know exactly where and how far out you want to go.
  • I have a bad habit of stretching my eyelid out, this can distort your line when you let go. Keep your eyelid relaxed so your line looks natural along with the curve of your eyelid.
  • For a more dramatic look, connect your wing from your upper lash line to the corner of your bottom lash line and continue to line your lower lash line.
  • Be sure that your line you create is right up against your lash line. You don’t want to be able to see any eyelid between your liner and lash line. If you notice a spot, go over the line again with more product, focusing on the lash line.
  • If your wing you create turns out too thick or messy, take a q-tip dipped in makeup remover to clean up your line.
  • Practice, practice, practice! If you don’t get it right the first time, keep at it! You’ll get the hang of it.

How do you create your cat-eye? Which product do you use and love?
