Red, White, and Beautiful

Posted on

Hey everyone, I wanted to post about my look that I wore for the 4th. I know the holiday is behind us now, but guess what? The 2012 Summer Olympics start in a few weeks on July 27th and this look also works to show your USA pride!

I saw a lot of crazy looks out there for the 4th, but I didn’t want to be hanging out at our friends BBQ with stars, stripes, and flags all over my face. o_0 I wanted to do something subtle, but still celebratory.

Cute and simple, right? Red lipstick, white shimmery shadow, and blue mascara. It’s as easy as that. I also decided to use some peachy blush, and blue eyeliner winged-out. I bought a cheap eyeliner at Walgreens for $0.99 so it was pretty hard to work with and had little color payoff. Boo.

My outfit you ask? I got this flowy red top at Target and these really cute and appropriate shorts at Forever 21.

Product spotlight:

Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer (SPF!)

MAC Eye Shadows in Shroom and Blanc Type

Great Lash mascara in Royal Blue

Smashbox Brow Tech in Brunette

Crappy blue eyeliner in Who Even Cares? x_x

MAC lipstick in Russian Red

MAC lipliner in Brick

Neutrogena Age Shield Face Sunblock SPF 70 (Seemed to work well, my face didn’t get red at all!)

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 70 (Not impressed, still got a little red, but maybe I didn’t spray enough?)

Zooey Deschanel/Retro Inspired Look & Braided Bun

Hi everyone! This weekend I was in Orlando visiting family and got a chance to do this really cute look on my friend Jen. She has brown hair and blue eyes like the oh so adorable  Zooey Deschanel, so we thought it would be fun to do a look based off of her style.

For the most part, Zooey wears a lot of neutrals and browns on her eyes and usually a light peachy pink blush. She’ll sometimes have a pop of color with her lips, but her looks are usually pretty tame and more on the natural side. I love it because it allows her pretty blue eyes to be the focus.

For Jen, we went with that and used light beige and nude colors along with medium browns on her eyes, a pink blush, and a some pink lip gloss.

Product Spotlight:

MAC eye shadow in Rice Paper, Blanc Type, Wedge, Espresso, Soft Brown

MAC Fludline in Blacktrack

MAC Paint Pot in Painterly

MAC Blush in Pink Swoon

Ardell false lashes

MAC Lipglass in Malibu Barbie

Easy Braided Bun:

To create this simple braided bun, gather your hair and secure in a high ponytail on the top of your head. Seperate your hair into either two or three sections depending on how thick your hair is, for Jen we did three braids. Secure your braids with clear elastics. Take one braid at a time and start to wrap around to create a bun. Secure each braid down with bobby pins. Don’t worry if your bun looks a little messy, it’s a casual look! Feel free to add a bow or headband to complete the look. Jen had this adorable green polka dot wrap we used which worked perfectly with the retro look.

I hope you all enjoy this look. I am planning to start doing more step-by-step/how to looks soon! If you have any suggestions let me know.

Mila Kunis Inspired Look: Dramatic Smokey Eyes

I think Mila Kunis is beautiful. I saw this one photo of her floating around Pinterest and I thought it was mezmerising. I thought I’d do a similar look tonight for the fun of it. It’s pretty dramatic and sharp. It’s definitely more of an editorial look and not something I’d wear out, but I think it’s pretty cool.

Products Used:

MAC eye shadows in: Moth Brown, Black Tied, and Solar White

MAC Fluidliner in Blacktrack

Dior Show Extase mascara

Ardell false lashes

What do you think about this dramatic look? Would you wear this look out or tone it down for a more classic smokey eye?

Beautification.

Remember my last post about dreams and finding what makes you happy? I’ve been doing some thinking. While I may not be ready to commit to a radical change, I could do something that  might fulfill some of the void I often feel.

When I was in college I was really into makeup, specifically MAC Cosmetics. I think a lot of  us had that phase, but I was pretty good at doing my own makeup and I had a lot of fun with it. I really wanted to work for MAC and started trying to make a portfolio. I think I did makeup on two of my friends, but I lacked the confidence. I was at my heaviest weight and didn’t have many friends. I never went further with that dream.

Over the years I’ve remained interested in beauty, even though I’m lazy so you don’t see me dolled up every day. However, I still feel confident that I’m pretty good at makeup and when I take the time to do it up, I do it well.

I did an inventory of my makeup the other day. I still have about 30 MAC eye shadows. I’ve been on Pinterest recently looking for some inspiration and have been seeing a lot of looks using gold and black, creating a smokey eye. This morning I woke up early enough, so I wanted to do something to recreate the look. Since I was only going to work, and more specifically, to an office currently only occupied by myself, another woman, and a dog, I didn’t want to do too dramatic of look for daytime/work. I toned it down so it was more subtle.

subtle gold smokey eye

Sorry for the not-so-great quality of these photos. My iPhone camera and the current lighting outside isn’t offering me much to work with. I used a filter on Instagram which I think helped enhance some of the colors.

For the record, I used:

  • Revlon Age Defying DNA Advantage Foundation (first time using this)
  • Nars blush in Sin
  • MAC Scult/Shape powder duo in Accentuate/Sculpt (I love this product, I’m sad it was LE!)
  • Smashbox Brow Tech in Brunette
  • Dior Show Extase mascara (my favorite mascara by far!)
  • MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack
  • MAC eye shadows in Shroom, Rice Paper, Black Tied
  • Urban Decay eye shadow in Baked
  • MAC lipstick in Cherish (this isn’t showing up well at all)

So there we have it. Next time I will bring you better photos. I know this is just one small step of doing something I enjoy and allows me to feel creative. Hopefully it will lead to more, bigger steps!

Is there a look you would like me to do and post photos and tips of?

Surprise Nails are surprising.

I saw a picture of some fancy nails on Pinterest that were pink, but her ring finger was painted with silver glitter. I decided to call this the “Surprise Nail.” You expect all the nails to be the same and you don’t see it coming…and then out of nowhere, BAM! A Surprise Nail appears.

Last week I gave myself a manicure which is always tricky. I’m working on my skills, but I still have a way to go to be as the professionals.

OPI Russian Navy with a silver glitter from Ulta

I really enjoyed this throughout the week and kept surprising John with my glitter nails, which like a loving husband he acted well, surprised!

Since I am such a fan, I convinced my friend Claire to let me give her Surprise Nails.

Essie Nice is Nice with an NYC chunky glitter

Claire is a scientist and promised to wear gloves this week so chemicals don’t melt away her pretty polish.

Tonight, I was painting my nails with a new color I got this weekend and a little inspriration came out of the blue for a shatter Surprise Nail.

Essie Tart Deco with OPI Black Shatter

I loved how this one came out. A little sloppier than I would have liked, but my arms are sore from CrossFit. Cut me a break.

My friend Daniella was also inspired by Suprise Nails and sent me a photo of hers. An animal print surprise nail! She said she used the nail stickers for her surprise nail.

What do you think about this new trend that I went ahead and named? Share your photos!
